- Corridors, classrooms, playgrounds, or lunch queues
What you need (quick prep)
- Calm body language and slow pace
- A pre‑taught visual or tactile cue
- A short, familiar anchor task
The 5‑minute sequence (step‑by‑step)
- Scan and anchor (0:00–0:45)
- Slow your breathing. Plant both feet. Soften shoulders.
- Decide: de‑escalate here or relocate quietly.
- Silent signal (0:45–1:15)
- Use your pre‑agreed cue: gentle hand sign, light tap on desk, or card placed.
- Make eye contact only if it calms. No words yet.
- Reduce load (1:15–2:15)
- Lower lights if possible. Pause music. Reduce visual clutter.
- Offer a low‑demand anchor task: sorting cards, quiet reading, breathing square.
- Co‑regulate posture (2:15–3:15)
- Model 4‑2‑6 breathing for 4 cycles.
- Keep movements predictable. Avoid sudden gestures.
- Choice and plan (3:15–4:15)
- Present two simple, safe choices on a card or fingers.
- “Now or next” frame: Now = anchor task. Next = brief check‑in or return to activity.
